Fertiliser Industry Body Seeks Lifting of Non-Subsidised Product Sales Ban in Three States

The Fertiliser Association of India (FAI) has requested the government to revoke the ban on sales of non-subsidised fertilisers in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Bihar. The industry body argued that the restriction could harm farmers during the current Rabi season who depend on specialised nutrition solutions tailored to their specific crop and soil requirements.
FAI contended that limiting access to these products would undermine agricultural productivity and deprive farmers of options beyond subsidised fertilisers. The association emphasised that non-subsidised variants often contain customised nutrient blends designed to address regional soil deficiencies and crop-specific needs.
The ban, currently in effect across the three states, was likely imposed to prioritise distribution of subsidised fertilisers. However, FAI's position suggests the restriction may inadvertently restrict farmer choice and potentially impact yields during a critical growing season.
