Next Phase of Farm Electrification: Power Tillers and Weeders to Join Tractors

India's agricultural electrification drive is poised to enter a new phase that extends beyond tractors to encompass a broader range of farm machinery. The strategy calls for a dual-track approach: continuing the existing electric tractor programme while simultaneously introducing power tillers and weeders into the electrified farming ecosystem.
The expansion aims to address core farming challenges by lowering input costs, raising farm incomes, and reducing agricultural waste. Power tillers and weeders, which form essential components of farm operations, have largely remained outside current electrification initiatives despite their significant potential impact on overall farm productivity and sustainability.
Industry players have already begun building frameworks around electric tractors, but policymakers and stakeholders are now recognizing the need to scale electrification across the entire machinery chain. This comprehensive approach is expected to make mechanized farming more cost-effective and environmentally sustainable for smallholder and marginal farmers across India.
