Government plans centralised, faceless GST system for multi-jurisdiction businesses

The government plans to introduce a centralised, faceless GST administration system targeting around 2 lakh businesses that operate across multiple CGST jurisdictions, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced. The proposed reform will be part of GST reforms scheduled for 2026.
The new framework will encompass scrutiny, audits, adjudication, appeals and taxpayer services under a unified structure. Public consultation is planned before Budget 2027, with full implementation targeted for the financial year 2027-28.
The move aims to simplify tax compliance and reduce administrative burden for large, multi-state enterprises by centralising their interactions with tax authorities rather than managing separate jurisdiction-specific requirements.
