GST Council to propose major reforms on arrest powers, ITC unblocking, compliance simplification

The GST Council, meeting in New Delhi, is expected to propose significant reforms aimed at streamlining tax administration. One key reform will introduce safeguards around arrest powers for tax officers, requiring court orders before detentions can be made.
The council is also considering unblocking input tax credits (ITC) on certain business expenses, a move that could benefit multiple industries. Small taxpayers may benefit from a simplified registration process and reduced compliance requirements, aimed at easing the tax filing burden for smaller businesses.
