Starvation driving mother to kill child a 'collective failure', says Gujarat High Court
The Gujarat High Court has granted bail to Lakhiben Solanki, who was arrested in March in connection with the death of her child. Justice Hasmukh D. Suthar ruled that the incident should not be viewed solely as an individual crime.
The judge observed that the case reflects broader systemic shortcomings in ensuring access to basic necessities including food, healthcare and dignity. The court characterised the tragedy as a "collective failure" rather than placing sole responsibility on the mother.
The bail order underscores concerns about poverty-driven crimes and the state's obligation to provide essential services to vulnerable populations.
