Guwahati Flyover Birthday Party Goes Viral, 14 Booked After Midnight Celebration Sparks Public Outrage

A midnight birthday celebration held on a flyover in Guwahati has triggered police action after videos of the event went viral on social media, drawing widespread criticism over the use of public infrastructure for private celebrations.
The incident has led to a case being registered against 14 individuals, including the businessman who organised the event and his wife for whom the celebration was held.
According to reports, the flyover was decorated with balloons and a red carpet, while multiple vehicles were parked on the structure. Fireworks were also seen during the celebration, which took place around 12:10 am on June 22.
Videos circulating online show the woman walking on a red carpet laid on the flyover as special effects were set off nearby, followed by cake-cutting scenes in the middle of the road. The visuals sparked public outrage over safety risks and traffic disruption.
Police identified the organiser as Goutam Boruah, a resident of North Guwahati, who arranged the event for his wife Karabi Boruah’s 42nd birthday, along with several friends and associates present at the scene.
Following the viral videos, Guwahati Police detained Boruah for questioning and launched an investigation. Four vehicles linked to the celebration were also seized.
A case has been registered at Bharalumukh Police Station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, related to actions that could endanger public safety and obstruct public movement. The case has been formally recorded as Bharalumukh Police Station Case No. 79/2026.
Police officials said the investigation is ongoing and further action will depend on the findings, while the incident has also sparked debate over the misuse of public spaces for private events and viral social media stunts.
