IAF at 94: Ageing fleet and engine reliance highlight need for faster indigenisation

As the Indian Air Force marks its 94th anniversary, defence analysts point to growing concerns over the fleet's age and continued reliance on imported engines. The IAF operates several ageing fighter aircraft that require modernisation to maintain operational readiness.
Experts emphasise the urgency of accelerating indigenisation efforts to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers and strengthen self-reliance in defence manufacturing. Developing indigenous engine technology and accelerating the induction of new-generation aircraft are seen as critical for enhancing the force's capabilities and strategic autonomy.
