IIT Bombay introduces measures following student death

IIT Bombay has announced a comprehensive overhaul of its student wellness support system following the suicide of student Sahil Wakode on September 18. The death, which occurred hours after Wakode was allegedly found using a mobile phone during a mid-semester examination, triggered widespread protests on campus from students and the deceased's parents. The institute's Dean of Students' Affairs, communicating on behalf of Director Professor Shireesh Kedare, outlined the proposed changes after discussions with student representatives.
The new measures include the appointment of student wellness secretaries at the hostel level, increased student participation in departmental committees, and strengthened support systems. IIT Bombay has also announced the appointment of an associate dean for student wellness. The institute plans to establish common play areas in hostels, with general secretaries, sports councillors, and wardens to be consulted for identifying suitable spaces and understanding residents' concerns. Additionally, the institute is considering replacing hostel fans, with options identified pending final decisions after student feedback.
The changes also address academic concerns, with new measures against exam malpractices proposed alongside meetings with department heads featuring greater student participation. The institute is expected to begin a phased rollout of these proposed changes this week as part of broader efforts to ensure student wellness on campus.
