India And US May Sign First Phase Of Trade Deal By July, Says Piyush Goyal

India and the United States could be on the verge of announcing a major trade breakthrough, with Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal indicating that the first phase of a long-awaited bilateral trade agreement may be ready for signing as early as July.
The development signals significant progress in negotiations that have been underway for months, with officials from both countries working to bridge remaining gaps and finalise key areas of cooperation. The proposed pact is expected to strengthen commercial ties between two of the world's largest economies and open new opportunities for businesses on both sides.
Speaking about the ongoing discussions, Goyal expressed confidence that negotiators were making rapid headway. He noted that trade teams from the United States recently held extensive consultations in New Delhi and that efforts were underway to conclude unresolved issues. According to the minister, the objective is to put in place a robust first-stage agreement within the next few weeks.
The proposed arrangement is being viewed as a crucial step toward a broader economic partnership between New Delhi and Washington. Industry experts believe the agreement could provide Indian exporters with improved access to the American market, enhancing competitiveness in sectors ranging from manufacturing to services.
Trade relations between the two nations have gained increasing importance in recent years as both countries seek to diversify supply chains, deepen investment flows and expand strategic economic cooperation. A successful deal could also encourage fresh business investments and strengthen bilateral commercial engagement.
Negotiations had earlier faced hurdles after uncertainty emerged over tariff-related measures introduced by the United States. Concerns regarding import duties and trade restrictions slowed progress for a period, but recent rounds of discussions appear to have revived momentum.
The talks have continued despite differences on certain trade issues, demonstrating a shared interest in reaching a mutually beneficial arrangement. Officials from both countries are now focused on resolving outstanding matters before the targeted timeline.
