India's proposed BS-VII vehicle emission rules: what changes
India is preparing to introduce BS-VII vehicle emission standards, marking a significant tightening of pollution controls. The draft rules propose on-road emissions testing alongside existing laboratory tests, aiming to capture real-world pollution levels more accurately.
The new standards will introduce checks on emissions from brakes and tyres, addressing pollution sources beyond engine exhaust. A phased implementation is planned, with passenger cars set to begin compliance from April 2029, followed by other vehicle categories.
These measures align with India's broader push to improve air quality and meet environmental standards. The shift to BS-VII represents a step toward harmonising India's emission norms with stricter global benchmarks, requiring manufacturers to invest in cleaner technologies.
