India reaches 84% of 2037 cold-storage target; potatoes dominate usage

India has reached 84 per cent of its cold-storage capacity target set for 2037, according to official data. However, the distribution remains highly skewed, with potatoes accounting for approximately three-quarters of the total capacity in operation.
More than half of the nation's cold-storage infrastructure is concentrated in just two states—Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. This concentration highlights the need for wider geographic diversification to support storage of other perishable commodities across regions.
