India must balance Gulf engagement with geopolitical risk management
India's deepening engagement with Gulf Cooperation Council countries, reflected in the recent review of their Joint Action Plan and ongoing free trade agreement negotiations, presents substantial economic opportunities. However, this closer integration also creates vulnerabilities across multiple Indian sectors to geopolitical volatility in the region.
The interconnected nature of India's economic ties with Gulf nations—spanning energy, trade, remittances, and investment—means that diversification strategies alone cannot adequately shield Indian industries from regional instability. Policymakers must acknowledge these structural interdependencies while pursuing closer ties.
As India expands commercial and strategic partnerships with GCC members, a parallel framework for risk assessment and mitigation becomes essential. This requires balancing the pursuit of economic benefits with proactive measures to insulate critical sectors from potential geopolitical shocks, ensuring sustainable long-term growth.
