India to mandate domestic chips in smart meters by mid-2028

India's Power Secretary Pankaj Agarwal has announced that the country will mandate the use of domestically-manufactured chips in smart meters by mid-2028. The move is part of efforts to boost domestic semiconductor production and reduce reliance on imported components in critical infrastructure.
The timeline reflects the government's broader push towards self-reliance in electronics manufacturing, aligning with initiatives like 'Make in India' and the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for semiconductors.
