India needs smarter healthcare margin policy beyond current MRP ceiling

India's Maximum Retail Price (MRP) framework was created to protect consumers by setting price ceilings on medicines. However, in the healthcare sector, this mechanism has limitations and can obscure how drug prices are actually structured.
The current MRP system functions as a one-size-fits-all ceiling but fails to address underlying cost architectures and profit margins across different categories of medicines and treatments. This opacity can lead to inefficient pricing that doesn't reflect true production costs or market realities.
Experts argue that India requires a more nuanced approach—one that implements differential profit and margin strategies tailored to various healthcare segments. Such a policy would provide greater transparency in how prices are calculated, ensuring that while consumers remain protected, the system also allows for sustainable pricing that supports pharmaceutical innovation and distribution networks.
