India rejects Hague tribunal's directions on Ratle hydropower project, defends water rights

India has rejected directions issued by a tribunal at The Hague concerning the Ratle hydropower project, asserting its hydropower development rights under the Indus Waters Treaty. The dispute centres on the design and operations of the project, with India maintaining its position on water resource utilization.
The Indus Waters Treaty, signed in 1960 between India and Pakistan, governs the sharing and use of waters from the Indus River and its tributaries. The tribunal's intervention in the Ratle project has prompted India to defend its sovereignty over hydropower development on rivers allocated to it under the treaty framework.
