India renames 28 locations in Ladakh on official maps

The Home Ministry announced on October 2 that India has officially registered 28 places and geographic structures in the union territory of Ladakh on Survey of India maps with standardized names. These locations include mountain peaks, land areas, mountain passes, glaciers, valleys and other geographic features. The process was carried out in consultation with the Ladakh administration.
The officially named sites include Atisha Giri peak, Brangsa land area and Chapching Pass among others. The government stated the objective is to establish uniform identification of these locations in official records and maps. Such standardization is considered administratively and strategically important in border areas prone to territorial disputes.
While the Home Ministry did not explicitly link the move to India's boundary disputes with China over northern and eastern Ladakh, establishing official geographic names in maps strengthens territorial claims. A similar process was previously conducted in Arunachal Pradesh.
