India's 2014 WTO Stand Still Shields Food Security, Farm Support

On World Food Day, India's 2014 decision to block a WTO trade agreement continues to protect the country's food security architecture. India's stand against clearing the pact at the World Trade Organization allowed it to preserve exemptions for public stockholding of foodgrains and agricultural support programmes.
The refusal to accept the agreement's terms meant India could maintain domestic purchase and storage of food grains without breaching WTO subsidy rules. This protection has proved critical for supporting farmers and enabling government food distribution schemes.
The decision underscores India's prioritisation of domestic food security and farmer welfare over trade liberalisation pressures. Nearly a decade later, the safeguards secured through that stance remain foundational to India's agricultural policy and public food management systems.
