Indian Army Introduces New Dress Code 2026 Including Traditional Indian Attire

The Indian Army has released a new dress code, marking the first time traditional Indian garments are included in official guidelines. Male officers can now wear half-jackets, while female officers may wear salwar-suits and sarees. However, these traditional outfits are permitted only at army and government reception events; standard uniforms remain mandatory for military operations and official duties.
The Army's Adjutant Branch released a 174-page manual titled Army Uniform-2026. According to reports, the revised dress code follows directives to remove symbols associated with colonial rule. Previously, officers were required to wear trousers and shirts or suits at officers' messes and receptions. The new guidelines now permit bandhgala jackets and modi jackets as alternatives at official functions.
The Indian Army maintains multiple uniform variations for officers, tailored for different seasons and operational contexts, including distinct uniforms for peace stations and operational areas.
