Six in 10 Indian Nonprofits Use GenAI Daily, But Digital Maturity Remains Low

A survey of 500 Indian nonprofit organisations reveals widespread adoption of generative AI tools, with six in 10 using them daily. However, the sector's average digital maturity score stands at just 4.4 out of 10, and only one organisation has reached advanced digital maturity stages.
The State of Nonprofits Digitisation Report 2026 found that 85 percent of nonprofits use multiple generative AI tools, yet only 25 percent have assessed their impact or introduced safeguards to protect sensitive data. Key digital gaps persist, including limited use of analytics tools (only 25% of organisations), unclaimed Google Ad Grants worth roughly $5 million monthly, and minimal implementation of tracking pixels.
Language access remains a major limitation, with only 10.4 percent of nonprofit websites offering translation services despite most beneficiaries communicating in regional languages. Environment nonprofits lead on digital maturity, while sports organisations rank lowest.
