JNU faces scrutiny over four-month delay in sexual harassment allegations against Congress MP-Professor
Jawaharlal Nehru University is under pressure to act on sexual harassment allegations filed by 11 women students against Congress Lok Sabha MP and JNU professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam. The complaints, reportedly submitted to the university's Internal Complaints Committee in May following viva examinations, allege inappropriate remarks and claims that students were offered higher marks in exchange for sexual favours.
The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad staged a protest outside JNU's School of Social Sciences on September 9, demanding action and questioning the four-month delay in resolving the matter. The organisation raised concerns about whether the university's complaint mechanism functions fairly when the accused holds political influence.
The allegations emerged after one student's account was shared in a students-only WhatsApp group, prompting several other women to come forward. The university has not yet concluded its inquiry into the serious charges.
