Jairam Ramesh Targets PM Modi, Says Government Has Delivered 'Minimum Governance, Maximum Cover-Ups'

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Monday intensified the Opposition's attack on the Narendra Modi-led government, alleging that the BJP had abandoned its anti-corruption promises and was now shielding those facing serious allegations. In a strongly worded post on X, Ramesh claimed the government had replaced its promise of clean governance with what he described as "Minimum Governance, Maximum Cover-Ups."
Recalling Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 2014 campaign slogan, "Naa khaunga naa khaane doonga," Ramesh alleged that subsequent developments had contradicted that promise.
"Narendra Modi became Prime Minister in May 2014 after boasting of 'Naa khaunga naa khaane doonga'. That this was a hoax became evident soon thereafter," Ramesh wrote.
The Congress leader listed several issues to support his criticism, including demonetisation, electoral bonds, the Rafale fighter jet deal, the PM CARES Fund, and alleged irregularities flagged in government schemes. He also referred to the Congress party's campaign targeting the Adani Group, claiming it had raised unanswered questions before the government.
Ramesh further linked his criticism to recent political controversies, including allegations surrounding donations at the Ayodhya Ram Temple, the Supreme Court-directed CBI inquiry involving Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, allegations made against Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, and the recent defections from Opposition parties.
"In recent weeks, further evidence of the hollowness of the 'Naa khaunga naa khaane doonga' bombast has emerged," he said, before listing what he described as instances of alleged corruption and misuse of power.
He also questioned the continuation of certain Union ministers, criticised the government's E20 fuel policy, and alleged that irregularities in competitive examinations had damaged the aspirations of students across the country.
Sharpening his attack, Ramesh concluded, "Mr. Modi has delivered Minimum Governance, Maximum Cover-Ups. With him it has always been 'Khaunga, Khaane Doonga, aur Khilaunga'."
The remarks come amid heightened political exchanges ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, where the Congress and other Opposition parties are expected to raise issues including alleged financial irregularities linked to donations at the Ayodhya Ram Temple, examination controversies and other governance-related matters.
The BJP has consistently rejected allegations of corruption made by the Congress and has maintained that its government is committed to transparency and accountability.
