Bihar NDA Splits Over UCC as JD(U) Opposes Implementation Despite Parliamentary Support

A rift emerged within Bihar's NDA coalition on Monday over the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) implementation. Senior JD(U) leader Shyam Rajak asserted the party opposed UCC enforcement in Bihar, reversing its earlier Parliamentary support. He cited former chief minister Nitish Kumar's previous stance distinguishing between supporting the bill nationally versus rejecting state-level implementation.
Rajak argued the BJP-led government depends on alliance partners and that implementing UCC in Bihar was not on the agenda. JD(U) national spokesperson Rajiv Ranjan Prasad announced discussions with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the matter. The RJD separately opposed the proposed UCC move, accusing the BJP of pursuing divisive politics.
The disagreement reflects JD(U)'s efforts to maintain its secular image and retain Muslim voter support, a constituency crucial to Nitish Kumar's political standing.
