After 44 years, Jammu and Kashmir receives Ravi river water allocation

Jammu and Kashmir has received its allocated share of Ravi river waters after a gap of 44 years, marking a significant development for the region's water security. The allocation represents a long-pending resolution of water-sharing disputes in the region.
However, the realization of this benefit faces a practical hurdle: the existing canal infrastructure is aging and may not efficiently carry or distribute the water as intended. The deteriorating condition of the canal system threatens to undermine the gains from securing the water allocation.
Authorities will need to undertake infrastructure modernization and repairs to ensure that the Ravi waters can be effectively utilized for irrigation, drinking water supply, and other purposes across J&K.
