J&K Waqf Board Withdraws Standardised Sermon Plan After Backlash
The Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board has withdrawn its plan to standardise Friday sermons across mosques following significant backlash from religious clerics, political parties and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. The board, led by the BJP, had proposed implementing uniform sermon guidelines but faced unified opposition over concerns that the move constituted government interference in religious affairs.
Clerics and religious leaders argued that standardising sermons would undermine the autonomy of individual mosques and violate principles of religious freedom. Political parties across the spectrum also criticised the initiative, viewing it as an overreach of state authority into matters of faith.
The withdrawal reflects the sensitivity around religious governance in Jammu and Kashmir, where questions about the balance between state administration and religious autonomy remain contentious. The board's decision to abandon the plan underscores the challenges of implementing uniform policies in religiously diverse regions without triggering concerns about state control over religious institutions.
