Karnataka HC orders CID probe into rape allegations overlooked by police

The Karnataka High Court has ordered a fresh probe by the Crime Investigation Department (CID) into a case where police filed charges only for attempt to murder, despite the victim alleging sexual assault.
A Single Judge Bench of Justice M. Nagaprasanna expressed concern that the victim's statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure revealed a "disturbing and disquieting" narrative of attempted rape that escaped the attention of both the investigating agency and the trial court. The Court found the investigation suffered from "glaring omissions" striking at the root of fair investigation.
According to the case, the accused allegedly took his colleague to an isolated location after an office party, made repeated sexual advances, and attempted to force her into sexual intercourse. When she resisted, he inflicted multiple grievous injuries. The victim was hospitalized, and her statement was recorded by police, but rape charges were not filed.
