Kharge urges all-party meet on delimitation before parliament session

Congress president Mallikarjunal Kharge on Friday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting an all-party meeting before finalizing and tabling new delimitation proposals in parliament. In his letter, Kharge stressed that all political parties should be given adequate time to consult with each other and other stakeholders on the proposals, and cautioned against forcing through a far-reaching constitutional amendment.
Rajya Sabha opposition leader Kharge noted that 64 days have passed since the monsoon session was adjourned sine die on August 13, yet parliament has not been formally concluded. He cited his prior appeals to the PM on April 11, 2026, and again on July 16 and August 27, for multi-party talks before any delimitation-related constitutional amendment is introduced.
Kharge claimed that when a delimitation amendment bill was tabled on April 17, it failed to secure the required two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha, and the government faced a "decisive defeat." He stated this is his fourth request for the government to hold extensive discussions with all political parties before finalizing new proposals on the sensitive matter.
