Ageing pipelines threaten water supply capacity in Kochi

A technical assessment commissioned by the Kerala Water Authority has revealed substantial degradation in water supply pipelines serving several localities in Kochi. The study, conducted by French water management firm SUEZ, identified sedimentation and age-related wear affecting the pipelines' ability to deliver adequate water capacity.
The findings highlight infrastructure challenges facing the water utility as the city continues to expand. Ageing pipeline networks, particularly those serving established residential and commercial areas, are losing operational efficiency due to accumulated deposits and material fatigue.
The SUEZ assessment is expected to inform the KWA's maintenance and replacement strategy going forward. Water authorities typically prioritise pipeline renewal in zones experiencing the most significant capacity loss to ensure reliable supply to residents and businesses across the city.
