Kolkata Warehouse Roof Collapse Leaves 3 Dead, Dozens Feared Trapped as Massive Rescue Operation Continues

A major construction accident in Kolkata's Taratala locality on Wednesday triggered a large-scale rescue mission after the roof of an under-construction warehouse gave way, leaving at least three people dead and dozens feared trapped beneath concrete slabs and twisted iron beams.
According to initial reports, nearly 40 workers may have been inside the structure when the collapse occurred. Rescue teams have so far pulled at least 10 people out of the debris, while search operations continue at full pace.
Heavy cranes, earth-moving equipment and specialised rescue machinery have been deployed to clear the site. Personnel from the Indian Army, fire services, police and disaster response agencies are working together to locate survivors and safely remove those trapped.
The incident reportedly occurred around midday while labourers were carrying out construction activities inside the three-storey warehouse. Within minutes, the roof collapsed, burying workers under massive chunks of reinforced concrete and steel.
Eyewitnesses said panic spread across the area as loud crashing sounds were followed by desperate cries for help from beneath the rubble. Local residents and nearby workers rushed to assist before emergency services reached the scene.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the reason behind the structural failure, and a detailed investigation is expected after rescue operations conclude.
To assist affected families and coordinate emergency response, the West Bengal government has activated dedicated control rooms. Citizens seeking information can contact the helpline numbers 1070, 8697981070, and 033-22143526/22535185.
