LNIPE Student Dies After Abdominal Pain; Peers Demand Inquiry Into Medical Response

Shruti Upadhyay, a third-year B.P.Ed student at Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE) in Sonapur, Assam, died at a private hospital in Guwahati on Tuesday morning following abdominal complications.
Students alleged that Shruti reported abdominal pain starting September 4 but was given only painkillers by institute authorities. Her condition worsened by September 6, leading to admission at Sonapur District Hospital. She later developed urinary difficulties and was transferred to a private hospital in Guwahati, where doctors identified a serious medical complication before her death.
On Wednesday, LNIPE students staged a protest demanding a full inquiry into the circumstances of her death and a comprehensive review of the institute's medical facilities and emergency response protocols. The exact medical cause of death has not been officially confirmed.
