Mamata Banerjee slams Delhi Police over Abhijit Deepak's custody

West Bengal opposition leader Mamata Banerjee has condemned the detention of Abhijit Deepak by Delhi Police. She questioned why the activist was taken into custody merely for holding the Indian national flag while exercising his democratic rights peacefully. Banerjee described the action as an "undeclared emergency" and accused the government of suppressing dissent through intimidation.
Banerjee stated that a government afraid of disagreement now attempts to silence an entire generation through coercion and fear. She characterized this as a fascist approach that cannot tolerate any voice that does not align with its wishes. She expressed solidarity with Deepak and others, saying they represent the courage, conscience, and dreams of India's youth.
According to a press release, Deepak, founder and national coordinator of the Cockroach Janata Party, was detained by Delhi Police before reaching Central Park at Connaught Place, where he intended to make a peaceful presence with the national flag. The detention occurred while Deepak was walking alone to the residence of NCP-SCP spokesperson Aniruddha Gawande, with no crowd or demonstration present.
