Meta Ray-Ban Smart Glasses Raise Privacy Concerns Over Secret Recording and Data Misuse
Meta's AI-powered Ray-Ban smart glasses, marketed as a hands-free technology solution, are facing growing privacy concerns. An investigation by Swedish newspapers found that data annotators working for Meta's subcontractor Sama in Nairobi have accessed highly sensitive material captured through the glasses, including videos from private homes, bathrooms and bedrooms.
Workers reported encountering footage of people in intimate situations, undressed or exposed to private information such as bank card details. Some described material recorded without the knowledge or consent of those filmed. The workers said they are expected to continue labelling such sensitive content despite recognizing the private nature of the material.
The concerns highlight questions about what happens to information captured by the glasses after recording and how data from these devices is managed during AI training processes.
