Modi pitches BRICS seafarer rescue network amid rising maritime deaths

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has proposed a BRICS-led distress network to rescue seafarers operating in high-risk maritime zones, including the Strait of Hormuz and the Black Sea. The proposal comes as Indian merchant mariners face mounting dangers in conflict theatres.
At least 15 Indian seafarers have been killed across the two regions — 10 in West Asia and five in the Black Sea. The initiative seeks coordinated action among BRICS nations to enhance maritime safety and provide emergency assistance to distressed vessels and crews in contested waters.
