Mumbai BMC Turns to Advanced Technology to Combat Water Loss from Leakages

Mumbai is facing a severe water crisis, losing nearly 700 million litres daily to pipeline leakages. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is exploring advanced leak detection technologies to address the challenge and ensure timely repairs and safe water supply.
A Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) corporator proposed installing advanced camera systems in water pipelines to detect leakages and contamination early. The BMC administration responded that it is trialling leak detection equipment from various manufacturers to identify the most suitable technology for faster and more effective detection.
The civic body stated it will use methods such as Sounding and T-10 Leak Detection Machines to identify suspected leaks, with CCTV inspection deployed only at specific locations where necessary. Corporators have also flagged illegal water connections as a significant contributor to water loss, with over 1,000 unauthorised connections detected in some areas. Officials acknowledged that modern, cost-effective, and reliable leak detection technologies are needed to accurately pinpoint leak locations, especially under concrete roads where conventional methods fall short.
