Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde Urges Residents To Stay Indoors As Heavy Rain Batters City

With Mumbai continuing to witness intense monsoon showers, Mayor Ritu Tawde on Monday appealed to residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain indoors over the next few days as the city remains under a Red Alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Warning that heavy rainfall, strong winds and high tides could pose serious risks, the Mayor said the civic administration is operating on a war footing and closely monitoring the evolving weather situation.
"People should avoid going outdoors till July 8–10 due to the rains. The entire administration is working on a war footing," Tawde said while urging citizens to cooperate with authorities.
She said the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has intensified its emergency response and is issuing weather advisories to residents at regular intervals to keep them informed about changing conditions.
As part of precautionary measures, BMC-run schools have been ordered to remain closed on Monday and Tuesday, while authorities will review weather conditions before deciding on any further extension. The Mayor also appealed to private companies to allow employees to work from home wherever possible to minimise travel during the ongoing spell of severe weather.
Despite widespread rain-related disruptions across the city, Tawde noted that Mumbai's suburban railway network has continued to function, although commuters have been advised to travel only if absolutely necessary.
The civic administration has deployed emergency teams across vulnerable locations as Mumbai continues to face waterlogging, tree fall incidents, traffic disruptions and flooding caused by relentless rainfall. Authorities have also been using advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence-based monitoring systems, to strengthen flood forecasting and improve emergency response.
With more heavy rainfall forecast over the coming days, civic officials have once again urged residents to rely on official advisories, stay away from flood-prone areas and avoid venturing outdoors unless essential.
