Mumbai Metro Line 7A Hits Design Snag Over Airport Height Clearance

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has held its general consultant SYSTRA-CEG-SMCIPL consortium responsible for inadequately accounting for overhead electrification (OHE) system height while designing the Metro Line 7A airport corridor. The oversight has created potential clearance issues at the airport-bound stretch.
MMRDA is awaiting a final technical report from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) on permissible height clearances and whether modifications will be needed. Metro Project Director Basavaraj M B stated that the consultant failed to "adequately highlight and factor in" the additional height requirement at the design stage.
Line 7A is a 3.4-km extension connecting Andheri East to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, with 70% construction completed. The project has faced delays, and this design lapse could necessitate modifications to parts of the elevated viaduct.
