Mumbai On Highest Rain Alert As IMD Warns Of Extremely Heavy Showers And Strong Winds

Mumbai remained on maximum weather alert on Monday after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) upgraded its rainfall warning to a Red Alert, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall, powerful wind gusts and the possibility of widespread disruption across the city and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The weather department warned that intense rain spells accompanied by winds of up to 80–90 kmph could continue over the next several hours, prompting civic authorities to activate emergency response measures and issue fresh safety advisories for residents.
Rainfall figures released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) showed that several parts of the city received more than 200 mm of rain during the 24-hour period ending at 8 am on Monday. Among the worst-affected locations were Vikhroli West, Malvani, Borivali, Chincholi, Mulund, Kandivali, Dindoshi and other suburbs, where exceptionally heavy rainfall led to waterlogging and disruption of normal life.
In anticipation of further downpours, the BMC has deployed nearly 15,000 civic workers, disaster response personnel and emergency staff across Mumbai to tackle flooding, fallen trees, structural damage and other rain-related emergencies. Senior officials are monitoring conditions around the clock and coordinating relief operations in vulnerable locations.
Authorities have urged citizens to remain indoors unless travel is absolutely essential. Residents have also been advised to stay away from beaches, flooded roads, old buildings, electric poles, trees and other vulnerable structures due to the heightened risk posed by heavy rain and strong winds.
The civic body has asked people to immediately report emergencies such as flooding, tree falls or building collapses through the BMC helpline 1916, while reminding citizens to rely only on official weather updates and advisories as Mumbai continues to experience one of the season's most intense spells of monsoon rainfall.
