Mumbai Police Warn of AI-Powered Deepfake Marriage Proposal Scam

Mumbai police have issued a warning about a sophisticated romance scam involving deepfake technology and artificial intelligence. Scammers create fake personas using AI-generated photos, deepfake videos and voice cloning to pose as successful professionals living abroad on matrimonial and social media platforms.

After building emotional trust over weeks or months through frequent communication and simulated video calls, fraudsters manufacture emergencies such as visa complications, customs charges or medical crises to solicit financial assistance. Despite realistic video interactions, victims should exercise extreme caution as visual and auditory presence no longer guarantee authenticity in the age of generative AI.

Police advise citizens never to send money, cryptocurrency or personal financial details to anyone met only online, regardless of how convincing their situation appears.
