Mumbai Suburban Rail Network To Expand Under MUTP-IV Plan

Mumbai's suburban railway network is set for expansion through a fourth phase of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP-IV). The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd. has begun a comprehensive technical assistance study to evaluate infrastructure requirements, including new corridors, additional tracks, station improvements and safety measures, as the city and metropolitan region continue growing.
The study will examine travel demand projections for 2030, 2035, 2040 and 2047, and assess extensions to existing lines and new rail connectivity. It will also evaluate platform extensions for 15-car trains and improved fast and slow suburban services. The analysis will account for emerging urban growth centres like Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Area and Mumbai 3.0/Karnala-Sai-Chirner New Town.
Key focus areas include system upgrades such as Kavach 5.0 signalling, additional AC trains and power augmentation. Passenger safety initiatives aim toward "Mission Zero Death", examining death and injury data, trespassing prevention and station access controls.
