Mumbai Launches 'Wings & Roots' Movement To Map Biodiversity And Build Green Corridors

Mumbai's environmental NGO NatureRe, supported by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, launched the 'Wings & Roots' movement on Tuesday to map and rebuild the city's biodiversity. The initiative enables citizens to log trees, birds, insects, and other species through a dedicated app while helping create and maintain native habitats across Mumbai.
The project aims to establish stepping stone habitats that strengthen ecological connectivity radiating from Sanjay Gandhi National Park. Partners include urban forests at The Nest on Malabar Hill and Captain Namdeo Lotankar Park in Mahalaxmi, with plans to expand the green corridor citywide. Research shows Mumbai has lost nearly 40% of its green cover since 1991, with remaining greenery fragmented and dominated by exotic species of limited ecological value.
Founder Radha Goenka stated that every garden, courtyard, and rooftop participating becomes another stepping stone in the ecological chain, inviting all Mumbai residents to contribute to the city-wide citizen movement.
