NCLT Order on Subhash Chandra: Separating Fact from Misleading Reports

A National Company Law Tribunal order dated 25 August in insolvency proceedings against Zee Group founder Subhash Chandra directed him to pay ₹6.5 crore against creditor claims totalling ₹22,006.57 crore. The decision triggered debate about fairness, with reports and political figures suggesting Chandra received an unfair reduction in liability.
Congress member Dr Shama Mohamed termed the order a "massive loot," comparing it to other high-profile debt settlements. Similar criticism appeared in mainstream media, with headlines implying Chandra had avoided repaying a personal loan through the tribunal's decision.
However, Chandra's office later issued a clarification contesting the narrative presented in these reports, indicating the claims and allegations were misleading and based on incomplete understanding of the insolvency proceedings.
