NDA Eyes Two-Thirds Majority as Rebels, Mergers Reshape Coalition

The NDA coalition is moving closer to a two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha through a combination of rebel departures from opposition parties, strategic mergers, and defections. This shift comes even as the 2024 general elections delivered significant setbacks to the BJP in four of India's most populous states — Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu.
The coalition's numerical strength has grown through parliamentarians switching sides and smaller parties aligning with the government, offsetting electoral losses in key regions.
