'NEET or High-Security Mission?': Annamalai Questions Tough Exam Checks Before Retest

Former Tamil Nadu BJP chief K. Annamalai has expressed concern over the extensive security arrangements planned for the NEET UG 2026 re-examination, arguing that the measures could add to the pressure already faced by students.
Ahead of the June 21 retest, Annamalai said authorities have put in place an unprecedented security system that includes multiple layers of surveillance, biometric verification, facial recognition checks and strict monitoring at examination centres.
In a social media post, he pointed out that the examination will reportedly be conducted under tight security involving central forces, advanced CCTV monitoring and enhanced screening procedures. While supporting efforts to prevent paper leaks and maintain fairness, he questioned whether such a high-security approach could end up creating additional stress for candidates.
According to Annamalai, students spend months preparing for one of the country's toughest entrance examinations and should not be burdened with excessive scrutiny before entering the examination hall. He warned that repeated verification checks, frisking procedures and extended examination protocols could increase anxiety levels among aspirants.
The BJP leader also raised concerns over reports that some candidates had encountered difficulties while downloading their admit cards. Although the National Testing Agency has assured students that technical issues are being addressed, he said such problems contribute to uncertainty at a crucial stage of preparation.
Annamalai argued that authorities must focus on eliminating examination irregularities without making the process more stressful for genuine candidates. He said measures aimed at improving security should not come at the cost of student comfort and confidence.
