NEET PG Rank Alone Cannot Determine Right Specialty Choice

A NEET PG rank determines which medical specialties and colleges a candidate can access, but it does not tell the full story of where to train. The rank creates a boundary around available options, yet specialty selection involves deeper considerations about supervision, clinical responsibility and long-term practice satisfaction.
Postgraduate medical education relies on mentorship—senior doctors guide residents in recognising diagnoses, prioritising findings and knowing when to seek additional opinions. These exchanges shape clinical judgment but cannot be captured in seat lists alone. Candidates should examine their experiences during internship and rotations to identify which cases sparked further learning and which responsibilities felt meaningful.
Beyond specialty choice, the specific department matters significantly. Two programmes offering similar qualifications may differ greatly in access to senior supervision, case discussions, procedures and constructive feedback. Candidates should closely scrutinise departments, speak with current residents and recent graduates, and understand patient volume paired with structured progression toward independent practice.
