Glacier blast alert in Nepal: How prepared is India for cross-border flood threat?

Climate change is triggering glacier collapses and glacial lake outbursts in Himalayan regions bordering Nepal, threatening catastrophic flooding across South Asia. Major rivers flowing from Nepal directly enter India's plains, and any sudden flash flood could devastate border states—particularly Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, and Sikkim.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has mapped over 56 highly sensitive glacial lakes in Himalayan states and is running pilot projects using lake-siphoning and controlled water drainage to prevent sudden outbursts. India has also expanded early warning systems with automated weather stations and water-level monitoring across vulnerable mountain regions, though operational limitations remain.
