Nilgiris promotes cultivation of native fruit trees
The Nilgiris district is reviving cultivation of native fruit trees through a dedicated initiative at its pomological station in Coonoor. An acre has been reserved specifically for indigenous species including wild figs, monkey fruit, wild guavas, jamun and Vikki fruits (Eleocarpus tectorius).
Local authorities are actively encouraging farmers to take up cultivation of these native varieties, marking an effort to promote traditional fruit farming alongside commercial agriculture in the hill district.
