Noida DM moves Supreme Court against ₹5 lakh compensation order from High Court

Noida District Magistrate Medhaa Rupam has approached the Supreme Court challenging an Allahabad High Court order directing her to pay ₹5 lakh in compensation to Delhi University student Aakriti Chaudhary from her personal salary. The High Court had found Chaudhary's detention under the National Security Act unlawful and ordered the compensation.
Chaudhary, a Delhi University student, was detained under the NSA. The High Court later found her detention illegal following judicial review. While ordering the ₹5 lakh compensation, the High Court directed that the amount be recovered from the District Magistrate's personal salary—a directive Rupam now contests.
The Supreme Court will examine whether holding an administrative officer personally liable for compensation due to unlawful detention is legally justified, and establish principles for determining liability when official actions violate citizens' fundamental rights.
