Supreme Court directs transparent inquiry into violence during student protests
The Supreme Court has directed a transparent inquiry into violence that occurred during student protests, noting that a prima facie case exists for investigation by a commission. The court stated that such an exercise should aid in framing a protocol for managing similar situations in the future.
The hearing revealed allegations of police excesses from multiple states. Among these claims was an allegation that a police officer in Bihar used an AK-47 against peaceful protesters. The court emphasised that whosoever committed excesses during the protests must be held accountable.
