Parliament Standing Committee didn't discuss MDR charges on UPI, says Gaurav Gogoi

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi stated that the Parliament Standing Committee did not adequately discuss Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) charges on UPI transactions. He alleged that government representatives failed to offer 'specific or satisfactory' explanations regarding the rationale for introducing new charges on UPI payments.
Gogoi's remarks highlight concerns over a potential policy shift that could affect digital payment adoption in India. The issue has drawn scrutiny over whether adequate parliamentary oversight preceded any decision on UPI monetization.
