PM Modi Uses Cricket Analogy to Highlight India-Australia Partnership as Both Nations Sign Key Uranium Pact

Prime Minister Narendra Modi used the language of cricket to describe the evolving relationship between India and Australia during bilateral talks with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Melbourne, where the two countries also strengthened cooperation through a landmark uranium agreement and a new defence partnership.
Addressing a gathering after the high-level meeting, PM Modi said cricket had become a symbol of the close bond shared by the two nations, adding that the sport reflected the spirit of their growing strategic partnership. Referring to Melbourne's global reputation as a sporting destination, he remarked that discussing sports in the city was almost inevitable.
Using different formats of cricket as a metaphor, the Prime Minister compared the pace and depth of bilateral cooperation to the game itself. He said discussions between the two countries carried the focus of a One-Day International, the speed of a T20 contest and the long-term commitment associated with a Test match, drawing applause from those present.
The remarks came as India and Australia signed a significant agreement on uranium cooperation, a move expected to support India's expanding clean energy ambitions and strengthen long-term energy security. The agreement is seen as another milestone in the strategic partnership between the two countries, which has grown steadily across defence, trade, technology and critical minerals.
The Indo-Pacific region also featured prominently during the discussions, with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to closer defence and security cooperation. The two sides adopted a joint declaration aimed at enhancing military collaboration and strengthening consultations on developments affecting regional stability.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said both countries would work more closely on defence-related issues in the Indo-Pacific that impact their shared strategic interests. India, meanwhile, reiterated its commitment to promoting peace, freedom of navigation and a rules-based order across the region.
The meeting forms part of Prime Minister Modi's ongoing three-nation diplomatic tour and reflects the increasing importance of India-Australia ties amid changing geopolitical and economic dynamics. Along with expanding trade and investment, both countries are focusing on cooperation in energy, security, emerging technologies and regional stability, signalling a deeper and more comprehensive strategic partnership in the years ahead.
