Vande Mataram now gets legal protection equal to national anthem

President Droupadi Murmu has approved a 2026 amendment that extends statutory protection under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act to Vande Mataram, placing it on par with the national anthem.
The amended law now penalises deliberate disruption or disrespect during the singing of the national song. The Home Ministry has issued protocols governing the new provisions, which carry legal consequences for violations.
Vande Mataram holds historical significance in India's freedom struggle. Students and the public should be aware that the updated rules now require the same respect and conduct during the song's singing as mandated for the national anthem.
